How to Make a Square Video in Premiere Pro
Last week I taught you how to make a square video in iMovie but TODAY, today I’m showing you my favorite way to make a square video and that’s with Premiere Pro.
How to make a square video in Premiere Pro
Fun fact: Square and vertical videos have a better viewing and retention rate on Facebook. Why? Because when someone is scrolling the ol’ ‘book on their phones, a square video takes up way more “real estate” on the screen than a horizontal video does (and the same with vertical, of course). Think about it, have you ever been scrolling and saw a video – which catches your eye more, the one that’s smaller and horizontal or a bigger, square video?
The problem is, I’ve seen the question, “um, how do I make my video a square like you do?” more times than I can count so here’s my EXACT method.
The steps below are text-only, for an exact run-through of what to do, watch the video below.
-
- Edit your movie like normal in Premiere. Keep in mind that if you’re converting the entire video into a square (as in, there’ll be no blank space at the top or the bottom of the square, it’ll all be covered by your movie), you’ll need to make sure nothing will be cut off when we turn it into a square (refer to the video for more info on what I mean here).
Note: technically you can edit while in “square mode” in Premier BUT I like to just work with the finished product when converting to a square.

- Export your movie from Premiere.
- Start a new project in Premiere Pro like you normally would.
- Drag your movie file into the media section of your project.
- Go to “sequence” and then “sequence settings” and change the size in the “frame size” settings to 1920×1920 (or some other square measurement). It will ask you if you delete all preview files, hit “yes”.
- Now, you can take your actual video file (the one you imported in in step 4) and scale it up to cover the whole square or position it where you want it on the square.
- Export like normal.
Once you’ve got the square, you can add titles and background colors and #allthethings to make the video look the way you want it.
How easy is that?!? Now, you can share square videos on your Facebook page or Instagram or WHEREVER you want to share them!
