This is a thing people ask me all the time… how do I get on the first page of Google? How do I get my blog post to rank higher? Etc., etc., etc. But, before I really get into the tips, I do want to explain that it is still very much a guessing game and up to Google what goes on that first page. However, I do have 5 tips that can increase your chances of getting on that first page.
Tip #1: (THE MOST IMPORTANT)
Pick Good Keywords
If you aren't using the Google Keyword Planner, you're missing out! This tool will allow you to type in a keyword and it will let you know if it's a good keyword, if there are a lot of searches, a lot of competition or give you suggestions on what keyword might be better!
What do you want from your keywords? We want pretty high searches per month with low competition.
- Example: Trello tutorial video and blog post
- High search for those keywords, relatively low competition- which helped drive people to my blog post, drive the video up through the rankings on YouTube, and bring a lot of people to my channel
Tip #2: Use Yoast
Yoast is a free WordPress plugin that allows you to “beef up” the SEO on a blog post. Yoast will go through those perfect keywords that you found and give you red lights and green lights to let you know if you are doing things the right way! It will become second nature to write a blog post and have the keywords in the right places, keywords on images, etc. In other words, it will help you do all the right things! If you aren't using WordPress- you should. Just sayin'.
Tip #3: Create a Video for Every Blog Post
The content will generally be the same as your blog post. So here's what you can do: Create the video, upload it on YouTube and then embed that video into your blog post. This creates SEO magic! The same keywords will be found in both the post and the video and Google loves that!
Tip #4: Optimize with the Same Keywords
You want to make sure that you are using the same keywords in your YouTube video that you are in the blog post.
Tip #5: Ditch the 404 Errors on Your Website
Maybe you put out a link to something, and then took it down, or you attached the wrong link. Google HATES 404 errors! It actually hurts your SEO for everything else on your website!
I tested this out a few years ago for myself. I had a blog post that was ranking on the first page of Google, but then I had some friends click on some links that would give them 404 errors. Within a couple of days, my first page blog post results dropped to the second page, and then by the end of the two week experiment they were on the fourth. I removed the 404 errors on my site and it changed it to 301 (which I will tell you how to do in a second!) and after a couple of weeks it brought my results back to page one.
If you are on wordpress, there’s an amazing plugin called 404 to 301.
It changes anything on your website that might have been a 404, like: A mistyped URL, a mislinked URL, a URL that’s no longer active
404 to 301 takes the URL that's causing the 404 error and takes it to a 301 page, which is a permanent redirect page. The best part? These DO NOT hurt your Google rankings and SEO!
The redirect page will say something like, “Oops, that link didn't work, but feel free to look around, join my Facebook groups, etc…” Whatever you want it to say! This will be a standard page you keep on your website.
Those are my five tips to help get you higher on your SEO and on the first page of Google. These are things I’ve actually done and have worked for me. Do you have any tips that you want to share? Be sure you let me know!
