5 Ways to Make Money on Youtube Before You’re Monetized
Sell Your Own Product
1. Merch
Merch is super common among Youtube creators. I think the simplicity of merch is overlooked! You can go through companies that will do all the work of approving, making, keeping inventory, and shipping your merchandise without having to put in the extra time yourself. From stickers to t-shirts to calendars, you can make it!
The thing with merch is that 1) you have to come up with something that people actually want to wear (maybe not just your face on a shirt) and 2) you generally have to have a bigger audience who want to support you in that way.
2. Physical Products
You can create physical products that align with what your channel is about. So, if you’re a makeup channel, you can create makeup, or if you’re a fashion channel you could have a fashion line. Physical products definitely take startup costs to develop and sell, so keep that in mind.
3. Digital Products
Maybe you make a course about something you want to teach or Lightroom presets or a workbook or an ebook… the possibilities are endless. Digital products have a way lower barrier to entry than physical products, and they’re easier to create.
Promote Other People’s Products
4. Affiliate Marketing
This is when you apply to be an affiliate for a company and that company agrees to pay you a small commission from everyone who purchases their product through your link. You can be an affiliate for Walmart, Target, Amazon, Ulta… whatever you want to be an affiliate for.
Affiliate marketing can come really naturally if you become an affiliate for products you love! If you’re a makeup channel, be an affiliate for your brushes. If you’re a content creator, you can be an affiliate for your camera equipment.
The cut you get from affiliate marketing tends to be really small, so you will need a lot of people going through your links to see a spike in income. That doesn’t mean it’s not possible, but it does mean you might start out small.
5. Sponsored Content
Sponsored content is when a company pays you a lump sum of money to create content that promotes their product. Sometimes, this comes with an affiliate relationship, too!
A lot of people think that they can’t get sponsorships because they’re a small creator, but that is NOT TRUE. You just have to know your audience and know where you’re worth and value lies.
You can absolutely make money on Youtube without monetization. Go get those dollar bills!
