Tips for Starting Your Blog in 2020
You Need a Niche
To start a new blog, you need to find your niche so you can build a following of people who want the content you’re putting out! That way, people who are searching for that specific thing will be able to find you. Once you’ve gained that following, then you can expand your niche and branch out.
Consistent Posting Schedule
You HAVE to be consistent or you won’t make it as a blogger. Full stop. When you’re consistent, it proves to the people finding your site that they can come back later and find something else that they want. You’re building trust with your readers!
Think of it like a TV Show – if you fell in love with a show and the network told you they’d release another episode whenever they feel like it… you’re probably not going to hang around. But if they release one every Tuesday, you better believe you’ll be back.
Consistent posting will also help with your SEO, or search-engine optimization. That’s what Google uses to show your blog in search results – and Google loves consistency. If they see you’re posting often, they’ll recommend your site more.
You Need a Way to Blog
You need a website! The BEST platform you can use to blog is WordPress. You DON’T want the free blogging account that shows up when you go to wordpress.com, though. You want a hosting account, you want to install WordPress on it, and you want to install a WordPress theme.
Think of it this way: your website with the WordPress theme is your car with all the pretty bells and whistles. Your hosting account is like the gas that makes the car run – it wouldn’t work without it.
WordPress can be hard to set up, but if you’re serious, do the research and figure it out or pay someone to set it up for you. It will give you better SEO results in the long run than the free blogging sites.
If you feel overwhelmed by WordPress, you can also check out SquareSpace – but WordPress will be a better choice if you can make it work.
Get Set Up with Affiliates
Bloggers make their money from affiliates, sponsorships, and ads. If you’re starting a blog, you should go ahead and try to get the affiliate relationships that you can get approved ready to go so you can include those in your blog posts. Amazon is a natural first step.
Even though you might not make much money in the beginning, if you build up a following and those followers reference your older content, you can make money from that post for years to come!
Set Up Google Analytics
This is imperative. If you don’t know how many people are coming to your website or which social media posts are getting them there, it will be much harder for you to approach brands for sponsorships. If you’ve got the numbers in a place you can easily reference them, you’ll be ready to make money!
Now get out there and start blogging, my friend!
